Finding ways to boost your shop’s paint labor and refinish materials bottom line

ndustry consultant and trainer Mike Anderson of Collision Advice recently shared some data showing an increase in the average number of refinish labor hours per job. On a national basis, collision repair jobs averaged 9.7 refinish labor hours in 2022, up from 9.3 in 2021 and just 9 back in 2019.

“This is a good sign, and particularly important given the multiple paint material price increases virtually every shop has experienced in the last year or two,” Anderson said. “We anticipate more such increases this year as well.”

The change could be based on either of two factors — or a combination of both. First, the rise in the last few years in the number of heavier hits could mean more panels are requiring refinishing.
